It’s been around four years now since Kodi has left Microsoft backyard. And this year, the avid fans of the original media center are rejoicing and excited for their favorite game console has Kodi again. Kodi has finally made its return but bigger and better.

What is Kodi?

For those of you that do not know what Kodi exactly is, let me tell the simplest word that describes this app—Kodi is an all-around media center. By all-around, we mean it can play your entire library of movies and TV shows both local and online. Kodi also supports most major operating systems to date. That includes Kodi on iOS platform, Kodi for Windows OS, Kodi app on Android platform, Kodi installer for Mac OS, and Kodi for Linux-based OSes.

If that’s enough, there’s more that Kodi can offer. It has vast support for addons that can deliver not just videos but also music and podcasts. And yes, it can also open your pictures so you can view it for family moments on a big screen.

Does that sound good to you? If so, here is how you can get Kodi for Xbox 360/Xbox One right now.

Before Kodi for Xbox

Some 15 years ago, a group of like-minded developers launched something that was called Xbox Media Player. At that time, the Xbox was one of the most cost-effective gadgets based on x86 architecture with TV-out, an optical drive, and reasonably simple “hackable.”

Eventually, other platforms were added besides the Xbox, and the project ended up being more substantial. The hardware scene continued to develop and ended up being less expensive, and the as soon as well-known Xbox became a sort of outdated as the other platforms were simpler to install XBMC. As of May 2010, it was announced by the XBMC designers that they would stop advancement for the initial Xbox.

As time has gone by, designers and users enjoyed running XBMC on their Linux, Windows, OSX, Raspberry-Pi, and Android devices; as such, nobody looked back. Although jokingly for nostalgic factors, we spoke about how enjoyable it would be to get it working on the Xbox once again. In the year 2014, we lastly closed the door and relabelled from XBMC to what we are now, Kodi.

The Beginning

Then, Microsoft announced the opening of its alignment of all devices towards a standard Windows 10 platform. Kodi’s eyes began twitching, and the team ended up being anxious if that would mean the long-lived dream would come true once again. Then they woke up once again, shook their heads, and persuaded themselves it was impossible as Kodi has become too complicated to port over.

Even the Desktop Bridge variation for getting regular applications to the shop was thought to be too tough. In June of 2016, Kodi was proved wrong as they got in touch with designers who had prospered with relative ease. With some small changes, they got the 32-bit variation of Kodi packaged and listed on Windows Shop in September 2016.

More journeys

With that milestone done, Kodi believed it’s where the story ends. Until that time, Kodi remained a 32-bit application and worked slowly on porting all required parts to be 64-bit compliant. Now, the UWP story begins. While 64-bit work was being done, the imagination is becoming real as the UWP application did not fade away.

Only a select few of the group was notified that this was going on as Kodi certainly would not getting any hopes up in case it fails. In December of 2016, the initial survey was done on what it would take to things done, and everything appeared plausible.

When that work was launched, the current Windows-specific code was chosen apart piece by piece and slowly transformed to be with the UWP specs. A challenging task as part of the code still includes “hacks” based upon the very first Xbox. However, as the work of the code libraries closing to an end, Kodi could finally announce that the early 64-bit builds are already available for Windows.

Then it starts

In July of 2017, the first faint signs of life ended up being noticeable with the beginning of Kodi as a UWP application on routine Windows 10. From then on, work slowly advanced on getting all bits and pieces into place, getting Kodi grown up and getting it all set for the Xbox. Sometime around November of 2017, the UWP code was combined into the master Kodi code base, and the last stages could begin.

From then on, Kodi could quickly develop test constructs that they could set up on Windows devices and proceeded to improve the UWP variation to were it is today.

How does it look?

Kodi could not be more amazing than how it is now. It is what it is. Simply, another Kodi platform that looks the same, however, just on various gadgets. But still, it does the job and does it well.
